On 11 October 2018, the Supreme Court of Norway set a new precedent on conscientious objection and freedom of conscience in the medical profession. The Court found that Dr. Katarzyna Jachimowicz acted within her rights when refusing to follow through with a medical procedure to which she had a moral objection. The Court told health authorities to respect the right to conscientious objection for medical professionals in their employment. Read the rest here

Argentina’s upper house on Thursday rejected a landmark bill that would have more broadly legalized abortion, dealing a setback to proponents of more liberal laws governing the procedure across the region. The vote, following a marathon session that ended early Thursday morning, came at a time when countries in the heavily Catholic region are reexamining the issue and considering expanding access to abortion. Tuesday, February 6, marked the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. While general news outlets, government officials, and social media recognized the day, feminist and women’s news sites remained silent, even as they claim to champion women.

Those sites included Bustle, Cosmopolitan, Jezebel, and Teen Vogue. They have no excuse. #EndFGM trended on Twitter, the Associated Press reported it – and the U.S. government and United Nations released statements on the day.

A man in the Netherlands has been allowed to die because he could no longer carry on living as an alcoholic. Mark Langedijk chose the day of his death and was telling jokes, drinking beer and eating ham sandwiches with his family hours before he passed away. He was killed by lethal injection at his parents’ home on 14 July, according to an account of the ordeal written by his brother and published in the magazine Linda. The Netherlands introduced a euthanasia law 16 years ago, which is available to people in “unbearable suffering” with no prospect of improvement.

Charlie Gard is a UK citizen born in August of 2016. He suffers from a rare genetic disease that has an almost non-existent survival rate. Experimental treatments are available in the US, but the British government run hospital and British courts have deemed that life support will be removed – despite the parent’s objections and their ability to pay for the US treatment via fundraising campaigns (1.3 million UK pounds were raised). While the court and hospitals selected the date of June 30, 2017 for the removal of Charlie’s life support, the staff of the hospital have elected to not do so in order to give the parents “more time”, although how much more time has not been explicitly stated.

The plight of Charlie Gard has now become an international issue, with both US President Donald Trump and the Vatican weighing in on his plight. Lifenews has an excellent write-up on the plight of Charlie’s parents as they continue the struggle to keep their son alive.

In 2016, an estimate 750,000 Peruvians marched in Lima to celebrate the value of every human life from conception to natural death. The Peruvian government also recognizes March 25 as the Day of the Unborn Child. According to the march website, the day is “based on article 1 of the Political Constitution of Peru, which states that: ‘The defense of the person Human dignity and respect for their dignity are the supreme end of society and the State.’
